Celebrating World Book Day

Hugh Baird College's Library and Learning Centre celebrated World Book Day on 4th March with competitions, awards and book give-aways.

For the World Book Day competition, students were asked to produce a poster, collage, poem or model to demonstrate what their College Library means to them.  Winner was Business Administration student, Fiona Campbell, who won £40 worth of High Street Vouchers with her poem about the helpful and friendly Library staff.  Second prize of £30 worth of vouchers went to Art and Design student, Lyndsey Gillett, and third, winning £10 vouchers, was Health and Social Care student, Megan Simpson.  You can read Fiona's winning poem at the end of this article.

The Library and Learning Centre also presented £30 worth of vouchers to their 'Top Borrower', Sarah Spollin.  Sarah's borrowing and renewals amounted to a total of 131 since September 2009!

Each of the College's three Library and Learning Centres had stacks of free books to give away, most of which were kindly donated by staff and students and they would like to thank everyone involved for helping to make World Book Day at Hugh Baird College a success.

World Book Day Poem by Fiona Campbell

The competition requested a poem but this is a little difficult for me,
I'm a profoundly Deaf Learner and rhyme is a bit tricky you see.
However, I like the people I meet each time I have my lesson,
These are their names so now you don't need to guess them.

Frank has a funny sense of humour, he makes you laugh,
Gill is learning Sign Language, that's a very good path!
Francesca is the Boss, she orders all the books,
Huw is the polite one, who always takes a look,
Val is the best with assistive technology, she helps you scan,
And Tim is the extraordinarily very, very quiet man.
Caitlyn is from America, that's a long way for a job!
Pat is the lady with the smile and whose hair is in a bob,
Wendy is the Library's friend, she seems to know every shelf,
Jo always runs to help you, she's the one in good health!
Cathleen is the Second in Command and always on the go,
And Ann-Marie walks past us both and always says "Hello".

Question:  'What does your College Library mean to you?'
The 5th Floor Library Learning Centre is my Classroom too.
I attend two times a week to work at a computer screen,
My card is scanned and verified by any of the above team.
