Dental Nursing - Diploma - Level 3

This course has been developed for those who wish to become a Dental Nurse.

The course focuses on the technical skills and knowledge required to be a professional Dental Nurse. Units of study include direct chair-side work and support during a range of dental treatments, organisational and legal requirements which underpin high quality dental care, and the role of the dental nurse in meeting patients’ needs.

The course has been informed by Skills for Health (SfH) National Occupational Standards (NOS). It has been developed to meet the requirements of the General Dental Council (GDC).

This qualification will enable candidates to register with the GDC as a Dental Nurse.

This course is validated by the General Dental Council.

What topics/modules are covered?

You will study the various aspects of dental nursing including:

  • First aid essentials
  • Providing chair-side support to patients for a number of procedures
  • Dental radiography
  • Principles of infection control in the dental environment
  • Provide chair-side support for the extraction of teeth and minor oral surgery
  • Management of oral health diseases and dental procedures

The course is made up of 15 mandatory units. Four of these units are assessed via online, externally set exams. All other underpinning knowledge is assessed using internally produced written evidence such as projects and assignments.

Learners need to have a placement in a GDC registered dental practice 3 days a week. You will be regularly visited and assessed on your practice skills whilst working chair-side.


What are the entry requirements?

In order to qualify for this course, you will need at least one of the following:

  • 4 GCSEs at grade C (new grading system: 4/5) to include English Language. It would be beneficial for you to also have subjects such as Maths, a Science or Humanity at Grade C (new grading system: 4/5)

Or

  • A relevant Level 2 qualification

Or

  • Industry related experience

And

  • A secured placement in a GDC registered dental practice

Study Programme

If you are aged 16-19, this qualification will form a substantial part of your study programme. The study programme has been designed to ensure that young people are fully equipped and ready to move on to the world of work or higher level courses. In addition to your main qualification, will you also get the opportunity to undertake relevant and CV bolstering work experience out in your chosen industry.
