Support for Care Leavers

Hugh Baird College is proud to hold the Frank Buttle Trust Quality Mark demonstrating that the College will ‘go the extra mile’ to support care leavers with both academic and pastoral needs.

Having first been awarded the quality mark in 2013, the College’s recent reassessment for the award saw us judged as ‘exemplary’.

In practice, this means that those school leavers who are in the care of the Local Authority are able to access specialist tailored support during their transition into college life.  This continues throughout their course and beyond into our higher education provision.

We work closely with Liverpool, Sefton and Knowsley local authorities and have a dedicated Retention and Progression team who offer practical advice and information on financial support, career progression and health and wellbeing.

The Frank Buttle Trust is the largest UK charity providing grant aid to individual children and young people in need, helping thousands of vulnerable children and families across the UK every year.  The Quality Mark aims to encourage co-operation from further education and higher education providers to:

  • Facilitate an increase in the numbers of care leavers entering higher education
  • Raise awareness of care leavers' needs
  • Enable care leavers to make the most of their time in higher education and to complete courses successfully
  • Help higher education providers to identify how best to support care leavers
  • Contribute to a national framework to assist local authorities to fulfil their obligations to care leavers
