Newly formed Thornton College FC made a big impact in their first competitive outing.
Playing at Goodison Park, home to the Everton FC, Thornton romped to three victories in four games to win their group and category in the Everton in the Community tournament.
The safe hands of Connor McTaggart ensured two clean sheets, while defenders Sam Hart Hughes, James Brolly and Chris Threlfall were keeping it tight at the back, nullifying any opposition threat.
Prolific striker Josh Murphy was at times unplayable in his favoured centre-forward role, grabbing a quick brace of goals in the opening fixture against Mill Green to steady any Thornton nerves.
Skipper and midfield dynamo Kieran Tinsley controlled the centre of the park while Mark Mullen’s support in attack provided additional goals.
Coach Liam Kirwan said “All of the students made the most of a wonderful opportunity and demonstrated the positive attitude and good sportsmanship that typifies Thornton College. “
Assistant manager Lorna Deane added “I can’t thank Everton in the Community enough for arranging this tournament. It’s a day our staff and students will remember forever.”
