Level 2 Floristry student, Lucinda Roscelli, is flying off to Northern Ireland this weekend to compete in the Squad UK Selection for the world’s largest international skills competition, WorldSkills. Next week, Luci will compete against four other young florists all hoping to make the squad that will go on to represent the UK at WorldSkills Sao Paulo 2015.
WorldSkills is held every two years in cities around the globe and the competition sees around 1,000 young people come together to compete for medals in more than 40 skills ranging from Aircraft Maintenance to Cooking. Participating in WorldSkills enables countries to share best practice in apprenticeships and vocational teaching, raising standards on a global scale.
The three days of competitions in Northern Ireland are part of an intense selection and training programme to ensure the UK representatives are ready to compete on a World stage in Brazil next year. Having already been shortlisted to compete to be part of the squad, Luci has been mentored by internationally renowned floral designer, Joseph Massie, to prepare her for the team selection process.
June Thwaite, Programme Manager for Floristry at Hugh Baird College and Senior Practitioner for Teaching and Learning for the Service Industries Directorate said: “Reaching this stage of the competitions is a fantastic achievement and all of us in the Floristry team wish Luci the very best of luck for next week. We’re very proud of how hard she’s worked to get this far and we’d like to thank Joe Massie for his continued support of our floristry students.”
