A group of Public Services students from Hugh Baird College were among the lucky few who got to step aboard HMS Portland while it was making a four day liaison visit to Liverpool. The ship was not open to the public, but the students were invited on board by Commanding Officer Captain Simon Asquith OBE.
HMS Portland is one of the youngest Type 23 frigates in the Royal Navy. The ship is 133 metres in length with a beam of 16 metres and a displacement of 4,900 tonnes.
Operations included a successful seven-month deployment conducting counter narcotic operations while working alongside the American Coastguard team, and a month-long deployment to the Falkland Island.
While aboard the ship, the group and their tutor Ian Tumilty got to meet with members of the ship’s company to find out more about what a career in the Royal Navy entails and the broad range of occupations available at sea.
Speaking on returning to the College Ibrahim Osman, who is studying on the BTEC Level 2 Public Services, said:
“Getting to be one of the few on board the frigate today was a great experience and something I’ll never forget. I hope to join the Navy when I finish my course at college, so I was asking about the selection process and the different places in the world they travel to. I learnt a lot”
Captain Asquith said:
“My ship’s company are delighted to have brought HMS Portland into Liverpool. We are pleased to be hosting a number of invited guests throughout our visit and we hope it will strengthen our links with the local community.”
Janet Trigg, Director for Vocational Studies at Hugh Baird College said:
“On behalf of the College, I would like to thank Captain Asquith and the company of HMS Portland for their hospitality today. As a college we strive to work hand in hand with employers to ensure our students are aware of the full range of opportunities their course can open up to them when they leave us.”
