A student from Hugh Baird College has won silver in the England Boxing Junior Development Championships in Rotherham.
Joel Smith, who is studying on the Level 2 course in Military Preparation, only narrowly missed out on being crowned England Champion. He put up a brave fight against his opponent Aiden Vitali in what was only his fourth competitive fight since taking up boxing four years ago.
The Norris Green teenager said:
“I only started boxing to improve my fitness and stamina for playing football. In the end, I didn’t have the time to do both so I gave up football to concentrate on the boxing. I joined Salisbury Amateur Boxing Club in Liverpool six months ago and now I’m training three times a week in the same gym as two world champions and members of the Great Britain boxing team.”
Joel enrolled on the Military Preparation course with a view to progressing onto the Uniformed Services qualification at Hugh Baird College. He is aiming to eventually join one of the armed forces and continue his boxing career with them.
His tutor, Clarke Pinnington said:
“Joel’s had a good start on the first phase of military prep and his fitness is excellent. His commitment to boxing is really benefitting him on his course as well. Getting involved with the sport outside of College is helping him develop his integrity, discipline and the will to achieve his goals. He’s learning vital life skills that will transfer well into his future career.”
