Budding Hospitality and Visitor Economy students aim to kick start their careers

Those with an interest in Hospitality and Travel and Tourism courses at Hugh Baird College, are being invited to attend a special Career College information event at the Malmaison Hotel in Liverpool on Wednesday, 20th January from 5pm.

In September 2014, Hugh Baird College opened the UK’s first Hospitality and Visitor Economy Career College for 14-19 year olds, in partnership with the Career College Trust.

The concept ensures students are both academically and practically prepared for the world of work within the Hospitality and Visitor Economy industries, both of which are huge employment growth areas in the Liverpool City Region.

Courses delivered at the Hugh Baird Hospitality and Visitor Economy Career College include: Cabin Crew, Travel and Tourism (Visitor Economy), Cookery and Food Service and Patisserie and Confectionery. Thanks to constant contact with employers in the sector, students with a clear focus on their career goals are able to build up related experience and industry links in order to get a head start in their careers. At the event, applicants and their guests, will get the chance to meet with the employers who work with Hugh Baird College’s Hospitality and Visitor Economy Career College, ask questions of the staff and current students attending the Career College and find out more about how attending the College could assist them on their way to their dream occupation.

Since the Hospitality and Visitor Economy Career College at Hugh Baird College opened, students have had the opportunity to take part in variety of different activities and events. These have included masterclasses with Michelin starred chefs, working at high profile events across the Liverpool City Region, taking part in Q & A sessions with sector leading figures, organising and delivering College events and visiting a number of the region’s iconic landmarks, galleries and museums.

Luke Johnson, Chairman of the Career Colleges Trust said:

“At a Career College, courses are designed and delivered in conjunction with top employers – to ensure that students are equipped with the skills needed to progress into a successful career.”
“As an employer myself and the owner of several businesses within the hospitality industry, I am well aware that the skills gap is set to increase rapidly over the next ten years. There will be many exciting job opportunities that businesses just can’t fill.”
“Hugh Baird College’s Career College offers it students not only a robust academic curriculum, but also the relevant practical and enterprise skills so badly needed by employers. This is a win-win for both young people and businesses.”

Hugh Baird College Principal, Yana Williams, said:

“The Career College enables students to fully understand the demands a job in the industry will have. Students have the opportunity to sample a number of different pathways from Chef to Travel Representative in order to establish which potential career is best suited to their aspirations. It also enables local and national employers to inspire, enthuse and pass on their knowledge and skills.”

Jess Finneran from Walton, who is studying on the Level 2 Professional Hospitality course said:

“The opportunities I’ve enjoyed since I arrived at Hugh Baird College’s Hospitality and Visitor Economy Career College have been unbelievable. I’ve learnt so much and my CV looks amazing now. Thanks to the college, I am already working part time in the catering team at Everton Football Club and I am hopeful that I will be able move up to a full time position after completing my studies. This has only been possible thanks to the opportunities the teaching staff at Hugh Baird College have given me.”

The event at the Malmaison on Wednesday, 20th January 2016 begins at 5pm, with presentations taking place at 5.30pm and 7pm. The event is open to anyone with an interest in joining a catering or travel and tourism course at Hugh Baird College. Those with an interest in other courses at the College are invited to attend the College’s Open Evening at Hugh Baird College on Thursday, 11th February 2016 between 5pm to 8pm.
