On Monday 8th February 2016, Hugh Baird College students attended the annual Merseyside Regional Sports Competition, competing in Basketball and Badminton against other colleges across Merseyside.
The event is in its second year and was created in conjunction with AoC Sport, Merseyside County Sport Participation, and seven regional colleges; Hugh Baird College, Knowsley College, Southport College, Cronton College, City of Liverpool College, Wirral Met College and KGV College.
The event consisted of a five against five basketball competition and a badminton doubles competition, with Hugh Baird College having participants in both events.
In the basketball, Hugh Baird College came out as eventual victors, beating Knowsley College 50-36 in a hard fought game. The game was close, with only five points separating the teams at half-time and players from both sides feeling the pressure. Hugh Baird College eventually pulled away in the final quarter before a late comeback from a spirited Knowsley College side made the score respectable.
Over on the badminton courts, Hugh Baird College had four doubles pairs taking parklTwo of the pairs through to the semi-finals, and two narrowly missed out after facing tough opposition. Both teams were then paired against each other in one semi-final with Frankie Marrs and Tom Gillett defeating Anthony Dickson and Jack Dewsbury 21-13, to qualify for the final. In the final they came up against a strong pair from Knowsley College, but played well and secured a deserved 21-15 victory to win the competition.
Speaking after the win, Tom Gillett said:
“Going into the competition we thought we were going to get beat every game, but as the competition progressed and we had won a few games, we thought we had a chance. Then when we reached the final, we knew we were going to win as we were confident, and had beaten everyone in the competition. It was great to be able to represent the College and bring home some silverware.”
The next Regional Competition is a dodgeball and table tennis event to be held in April. Hugh Baird College will be attending and will be hoping to win further accolades.
