Students get a business lesson at The Bridge

Students from Hugh Baird College recently put football rivalry to one side and travelled to London for a lesson with a difference.

The group, who study on the Level 3 Business Studies course, were invited to Stamford Bridge, home of Chelsea Football Club, for the Football as a Business Tour in order to find out what it takes to run the club.

The tour provided the students with a stimulating insight into the match day and non-match day operations of the club and gave the students the opportunity to see the business theory they have learnt in class in action in a real business setting whilst also touring Stamford Bridge in the process.

The students took in the changing rooms, the media centre, the club museum, the home dug out, club store and ticket office and the stadium’s spa.

Before returning, the students also took the opportunity to take in the sights of the capital and visited such landmarks as Buckingham Palace, the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben, Number 10 Downing Street and the cenotaph.

Speaking after returning to the College, student Jack Doyle said:

“The trip to Chelsea was fantastic. It was great to find out about the club and just how much goes on behind the scenes.”

Business Studies student Connor McIntyre from Croxteth who will leave the College this year to study Criminology at Liverpool John Moores University said:

“This was my first trip to London and I really enjoyed it. The business tour was really interesting especially the part about how contracts are drawn up and the different clauses that are in them, it was amazing,”

Ged Nicholson, the group’s tutor added:

“I would like to thank Chelsea FC for making us feel so welcome. The Business of Football Tour is specifically designed for vocational business students and it was beneficial for the students to gain the knowledge and facts about the workings of a professional football club.”
