Budding Physical Training Instructors get an insight to life in the RAF

Ten BTEC Extended Diploma in Public Services students from Hugh Baird College have recently visited RAF Cosford to experience what life could be like in the RAF as a Physical Training Instructor (PTI).

During the morning the students had the opportunity to visit the site’s centre of excellence, the RAF School of Physical Training. Whilst there, they had a tour of the impressive facilities RAF Cosford has to offer and received presentations on the career opportunities available to them as a PTI in the RAF.

The students and staff were told about the three different strands of PTI career path the RAF has to offer: Adventurous Training Instructor, Rehabilitation Instructor and Squadron Instructor. They also got the opportunity to tour the centre’s state of the art rehabilitation centre where those who have been injured in active combat work with PTIs to improve mobility and hopefully train their bodies back to full fitness and active service. Students met with airmen and women who are currently undergoing rehabilitation and were able to ask them how their work with RAF PTIs is improving their lives and future ambitions.

The highlight of the morning for the students was the chance to demonstrate their fitness levels by attempting the RAF multistage fitness test. With physical fitness being a key element of their course, the students were keen to post impressive results and they certainly did, with all achieving above the entry requirements to join the RAF.

After a healthy lunch in the Airmen's Mess, the students undertook a low ropes activity delivered by the RAF Outreach Team. Working together and using their leadership, communication and problem-solving skills, the students overcame a number of obstacles and challenges. Towards the end of the trip, the group were able to view some of the many aircraft based on the site.

Speaking after the visit Hugh Baird College Assistant Director for Vocational Studies, Matt Rogers, said:

“As RAF Platinum Partners, this experience is typical of the added value activity Public Services students at Hugh Baird College enjoy. The students benefitted from a fantastic day at RAF Cosford. They received a first-hand insight in to what life as a PTI is really like and I am confident that many will move on to enjoy successful careers in this field. I would like to thank the RAF for their continued support of the college and our students and we are looking forward to undertaking more activities with them over the course of the academic year.”
