This degree has been designed in close collaboration with the retail sector to ensure the delivery of a higher education qualification that will enable you to meet the demands of an ever-changing global retail design environment. Throughout the course, you will be involved in work-based/related learning, which will give you the opportunity to apply new skills and knowledge to a real working situation. 


The course offers an introduction in Year 1 to a range of skills and knowledge in Visual Merchandising and Promotional Design, which include the design process through project briefs, visual merchandising theory and practice, fashion promotion and styling, spatial awareness, 2D and 3D digital design, product presentation and historical contextual studies. Within Year 2, skills are applied in the following areas: ‘live’ briefs, advanced product presentation, fashion promotion, visual merchandising, retail brand identity and promotion, contemporary contextual studies, preparing for industry employment and the designing and installation of a final major project exhibition. 


The Foundation Degree in Visual Merchandising and Promotional Design will equip you with the vocational skills to apply solutions intelligently and effectively. You will develop a number of computer design skills by using industry software such as AutoCAD and Adobe Creative Suite (CS). Industry experience opportunities are an integral part of this course providing experience of real working life within the design industry. You will be given the opportunity to gain work experience via ‘live’ briefs, realistic project briefs, and industry talks as well as work experience with personal development planning.

What are the entry requirements?

In order to qualify for this course, you will need to be aged 18+ and have:

  • Pre Degree Foundation Art and Design
  • BTEC National / Extended Diploma in Art and Design / 3D Design / Graphic Design
  • A-Levels including Art
  • International Baccalaureate
  • Applicants will be considered with relevant industry experience and portfolio evidence

Additional Selection Criteria:
Meeting the minimum entry requirement for a course does not necessarily guarantee a place. Entry to all courses is subject to a successful interview. When assessing an application, we take into account your grades, predicted grades, reference and personal statement. From your personal statement and interview, we consider your motivation and commitment to success, and any relevant experience you may have. For some courses, we may also ask for a portfolio of appropriate work or an audition.

For some courses, students may be required to find a work placement prior to enrolment and/or undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Check. These requirements will be discussed at interview.

Mature Students:
We recognise that some mature students may not meet the standard entry requirements but may have gained knowledge and skills from relevant work or life experience and, therefore, we would consider your application on an individual basis. We would take into account your work and life experience and may ask you to discuss this in more details at interview.

Interview:
All applicants are invited to attend an interview with either the Course Leader or Course Tutor. You will be notified of your interview by our Admissions Team who will also update UCAS Track with details of your application.

UK and EU Entry:
Equivalent international qualifications will be considered towards meeting the general entry requirements. Additionally, EU students, for whom English is not their first language, will be required to evidence an IELTS score or 6.5 or equivalent. Equivalences include:

  • TOEFL written examination score of 550 plus a test of written English (at 4)
  • TOEFL Computer Equivalent score of 230
  • Proficiency in English (Cambridge) at Grade C or above

Please note: To gain access to some courses you may need to undertake a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. If you have criminal convictions or cautions, please do not be put off from applying for the course. Your acceptance on to the course will depend on the nature of any convictions and will be at the discretion of the University Centre and your placement provider. What can I do if I complete this course?

All students who successfully complete this degree may have the opportunity to progress onto Level 6 (Year 3) of the BA (Hons) Visual Merchandising and Promotional Design (Top-up) course at Hugh Baird College.

Duration

Two years, full time or three years, part time.

Cost

You don’t need to pay your tuition fees up front - Tuition Fee loans cover university or college tuition fees and are paid direct to the university or college, by Student Finance England. They are available to all eligible students regardless of household income. The amount you pay back is dependent on how much you earn and not how much you owe and you won’t need to start paying them back until you are earning more than £21,000 per year. Student Loans will also help to support your living costs.

  • £8,000 per year

The standard part time tuition fee rate for 2017/18 for Home and EU students is:

  • £1,000 per 20 credit module
