Business A-level

  • How did the founders of YouTube manage to create a business worth over £800m in less than 2 years?
  • Should Burberry have moved production to China?
  • What should tobacco companies do to maintain sales if smoking is banned in the UK?
  • Are zero hour contracts acceptable?

These are some of the issues you will consider when studying A-level Business.

What topics/modules are covered?

  • You will look at a number of different organisations facing different problems
  • You will analyse the key factors involved and recommend the best course of action for a business given its existing position: should it launch a new product?
  • Should managers increase staff pay or give more to shareholders?
  • Should a business recruit internally or externally?
  • How should you raise the finance needed to start up a business – should you borrow from a bank or sell shares?

What are the entry requirements?

If you intend to study a programme of A-levels:

  • To study a programme of A-levels (plus a re-sit in GCSE maths if needed), you will need a minimum of five GCSEs at grades 9-4 including English Language (grade 4 or above).

If you intend to study a combination of A-levels and BTEC:

  • To study a combination of A-levels and BTEC Extended Certificate (plus a re-sit in GCSE maths or English if needed), you will need a minimum of four grades 9-4 at GCSE plus 1 BTEC equivalent. If you have studied a subject at GCSE/Level 2, you must get a grade at least at 9-4/Pass, if it is to be studied.

Additional entry requirements:

  • GCSE Mathematics grade 4 or above

Should you not have or not expect to obtain the grades stated above, or not have relevant industry-related experience, the College would still welcome your application for this course as this will enable us to identify whether this course is, in fact, the right course for you or whether another course may be more appropriate.

All course offers will be subject to satisfactory interview and reference.

  • Examination – Paper 1 (Marketing, People and Global Businesses)
    A-level (35%) 2 hours
  • Examination – Paper 2 (Business Activities, Decisions and Strategy)
    A-level (35%) 2 hours
  • Examination – Paper 3 (Investigating Business in a Competitive Environment)
    A-level (30%) 2 hours

Career Path

Degrees in business, finance, marketing, law, languages and European business are only some of the options available to you. Careers within the business environment from marketing to strategy, communications to finance, and any requiring high level analytical skills and communication skills, such as, the entertainment industry or insurance. Or why not become the next Apprentice!
