“I did my level 2 qualification at Hugh Baird College so when I got an apprenticeship, I stayed with the College to do the level 3. I started at Tweenie Tots in September and I love it. I felt like part of the team straight away. Instead of going to College one day a week, my assessor from Hugh Baird College comes to the workplace to give me my assignments and review my progress. I’m able to take two hours a week to do my course work while I’m in the nursery which is great. It means that I work five days a week, interacting with the children and building my skills and experience in an actual work setting. I’m working with children from aged 2 years up to aged 11 years here so I’m learning so much more than I would if I was doing the course full time at College.”

“Amy is one of two apprentices I have at the moment. I’m a firm believer that we have to invest in developing a quality workforce for the future. Apprenticeships are the ideal way to do that because we are able to ensure that they’re trained to our own high standards. I have already employed two of my former apprentices. In the past, I’ve had trouble recruiting quality staff but by taking on an apprentice, I can make sure that, by the time they achieve their qualification, they are fully prepared for the workplace.
Amy started with us in September and I’ve found the College to be so supportive of her. We’ve built a good relationship with her assessor, Lee James, and I really feel that I’m working as a team with Amy and Hugh Baird College. It’s a three way partnership.
As an employer, I feel it’s up to us to give our young people the highest standard of training we can so that we build a quality workforce for the future.”
Lee James, Assessor at Hugh Baird College said:
“Amy has excelled during her time on placement building competency skills within childcare and developing her knowledge through the academic components of the course. The support Amy receives from all of the management and staff at the setting is something that has impressed me since day one and I firmly believe this to be a fundamental factor in helping Amy to achieve her career goals and complete her Level 3 qualification.”
