Fairtrade

Hugh Baird College and Hugh Baird College’s Student Association assign great importance to the College’s role within the international community, and therefore commit to supporting, using and promoting Fairtrade.

Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world. By requiring companies to pay sustainable prices (which must never fall lower than the market price), Fairtrade addresses the injustices of conventional trade, which traditionally discriminates against the poorest, weakest producers. It enables them to improve their position and have more control over their lives.

The Fairtrade Foundation have outlined five goals for a Fairtrade College, and our commitment to them is as follows:

  • Fairtrade foods are made available for sale in the Colleges refectories and there is a commitment to encourage the catering contractor to expand its Fairtrade product ranges.
  • Fairtrade foods are used in the College restaurant. Where this is not possible, there is a commitment to begin to use Fairtrade foods in these establishments as soon as it becomes possible to do so.
