Applied Science - BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate

Studying Applied Science will give you an insight into how Science is applied to many professions and industries. You will investigate real organisations that use science. The course will provide you a practical based learning programme covering the three areas of Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

Please note:
This course is only available to students studying two A-levels at the Sixth Form Centre at the South Sefton Campus. Students are only permitted to study one BTEC alongside two A-levels.

What topics/modules are covered?

Year 1:

In Year 1, you will study several topics including: animal and plant cells; tissues; atomic structure and bonding; chemical and physical properties of substances related to their uses; waves and their application in communications. You will be introduced to quantitative laboratory techniques, calibration, chromatography, calorimetry and laboratory safety, which are relevant to the chemical and life science industries.

Year 2:

In Year 2, you will cover the stages involved and the skills needed in planning a scientific investigation: how to record, interpret, draw scientific conclusions and evaluate. You will also study the physiology of human body systems.


What are the entry requirements?

If you intend to study a programme of A-levels:

  • To study a programme of A-levels (plus a re-sit in GCSE maths if needed), you will need a minimum of five GCSEs at grades 9-4 including English Language (grade 4 or above).

If you intend to study a combination of A-levels and BTEC:

  • To study a combination of A-levels and BTEC Extended Certificate (plus a re-sit in GCSE maths or English if needed), you will need a minimum of four grades 9-4 at GCSE plus 1 BTEC equivalent. If you have studied a subject at GCSE/Level 2, you must get a grade at least at 9-4/Pass, if it is to be studied.

Additional entry requirements:

  • GCSE Mathematics at grade 5 or above
  • GCSEs in Core and Additional Science or Separate Sciences at grade 5 or above
  • Distinction in BTEC Science

Should you not have or not expect to obtain the grades stated above, or not have relevant industry-related experience, the College would still welcome your application for this course as this will enable us to identify whether this course is, in fact, the right course for you or whether another course may be more appropriate.

All course offers will be subject to satisfactory interview and reference.
