Advanced Certificate in Teaching Mathematics: Numeracy

The aim of this programme is to enable you to develop into an outstanding maths/numeracy teacher. You will learn how to plan, implement, assess and evaluate teaching and learning and undertake a full teaching role, working with students at very low levels of numeracy and up to GCSE/Level 2. Our highly experienced staff will support you in the application of your knowledge towards becoming a highly successful maths tutor.

This course will be delivered through a combination of lessons, tutorials and practical experience in a classroom setting.

What are the entry requirements?

Admission to the subject specialist Mathematics: Numeracy awards within the nationally endorsed LSIS schemes will be open to both new applicants to teaching and in-service teachers, trainers and tutors in adult, community, work-based and further education and the wider Further Education and Skills Sector, who, at the time of starting the scheme meet the following entry requirements:

  • 1. BA / B.Sc / B.Ed. in mathematics or A Level mathematics grade A-E or Level 3 knowledge and skills in Mathematics (ascertained at assessment/interview).
  • 2. A Level 3 (QCF) qualification in a related subject, as a minimum.
  • 3. Five GCSEs at Grade C and above, or equivalent, to include English and mathematics.
  • 4. The ability to communicate fluently, accurately and effectively in professional spoken English (IELTS 7.5 or equivalent).
  • 5. A teaching or training contract for a minimum of 75 hours of teaching. In some circumstances, a voluntary teaching placement may be possible. The teaching hours must all be within Numeracy/Functional Mathematics teaching, and practice must be undertaken within at least two of the three levels of the numeracy curriculum - Entry Level and one other (Level 1 or Level 2).

Teaching Hours
The scheme is extremely dependent upon trainee teachers being able to put into practice in their own classrooms the values, knowledge and professional skills they gain through their studies. It is a requirement of the programme that applicants should be employed or in a placement as numeracy or functional Mathematics teachers, trainers or tutors for a minimum of 75 hours during the programme. Whilst this is a benchmark, in cases where the quality, quantity or breadth of the teaching is not sufficient to meet the requirements of the programme, it may be necessary to arrange for trainees to carry out some additional teaching. Teaching practice must be carried out predominantly with groups of learners, although some individual teaching can be undertaken.

Effective teaching practice experience should ideally include:

  • different teaching practice locations/settings/contexts
  • teaching a variety of learners
  • experience of non-teaching roles

In order to be considered fully qualified as a teacher of Mathematics: Numeracy, teachers need to have completed a generic teaching qualification such as Cert Ed, PGCE, DTLLS or DET either before, during or after the Advanced Certificate programme.

What can I do if I complete this course?

It is anticipated that demand for specially trained maths teachers in the post 14 sector will rise in line with the government initiatives that will see students studying maths and English throughout their compulsory education. Therefore, successful candidates on this programme will likely take up careers in colleges, training providers and sixth form colleges to teach maths up to GCSE level.

Cost

You don’t need cash to enrol on a course.

Tuition fee loans cover university or college tuition fees and are paid direct to the university or college by Student Finance England. They are available to all eligible students regardless of household income. The amount you pay back is dependent on how much you earn and not on how much you owe and you won’t need to start paying them back until you are earning more than £21,000 per year. Student Loans will also help to support your living costs.

  • £6,000 per year

The standard part time tuition fee rate for 2017/18 for Home and EU students is:

  • £1,000 per 20 credit module

The college’s tuition fees are reviewed each academic year.
