+ Student & Staff

Undergraduates are increasingly recognising the benefits of staying closer to home and continuing their education at their local college, making the best progression into their working lives without running up debts through accommodation and living costs.

At the same time, those who do want to move to a different city for their university experience are keen to choose a destination that offers value for money, an inspirational environment and the opportunity to live in a vibrant, cosmopolitan city. At the Hugh Baird University Centre, we feel we can offer all this and more.

Our degree courses are validated by prestigious North West universities, meaning that you can gain a degree from the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) or Liverpool John Moores University, right here in Liverpool. This means local undergraduates are often able to work around family and work commitments, and those from further afield have a chance to see the real Liverpool.

Who can do a university programme?

Anyone who has the right qualifications and/or experience can do a university course. For example:

  • Students who come straight from 6th form or college
  • Mature students aged 18+ who want to return to education
  • Individuals who are working in industry and want to study for qualifications to progress within their profession

Our Partner Universities

The University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) aims to create the perfect blend of knowledge and practical experience to equip its graduates with the confidence and skills they need to get ahead in the world of work and, as one of their partner institutions, the Hugh Baird University Centre shares this aim. Assuring Quality

The Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) is a national organisation which reviews the quality of Higher Education delivered by colleges. Their assessments are based on the core themes of academic standards, quality of learning opportunities, public information and enhancement.

Our regular QAA reviews mean that you can be confident you will be studying to the highest standards and enjoying the best support. In our most recent review (May 2015), we were recognised with two commendations and seven areas of good practice were highlighted. You can read the full report at www.hughbaird.ac.uk/HER

Valued by Employers

Degree qualifications are valued by employers and we work with many different industries to ensure that our programmes include the skills, knowledge and currency you will need in your chosen career. Our qualifications are work related, aimed at those who prefer to take a vocational route and build up skills to develop their careers.

Many of our undergraduates undertake live projects for local and national employers, enter local, national and international competition briefs and, for some courses, complete work placements. We are also busy working with employers to design new courses to add to our offer each year. Read more about how employability is embedded into our courses or take a look at our employer endorsements.

The University Centre

Our ultra modern multi-million pound facility, the L20 Building, houses a dedicated University Centre with open-plan study areas for those on our University level courses. The development, based on Stanley Road, also includes a multi-purpose performance arts space for public events - ranging from school productions to conferences - a community library and dedicated learning resource centre for our undergraduates, and a café with an outdoor seating area.

We currently have more than 400 full and part time University level students. In response to the growing demand for local university, provision we are continually working to increase the range of programmes we offer, so these are exciting times for degree courses at the Hugh Baird University Centre.
