Frequently Asked Questions

With so many different courses and qualifications to choose from, you’ll want to make sure you’re making the right decision to study with us at Hugh Baird College.

There are many differences between school and college:

  • Wear what you want - aside from work wear for vocational lessons, you can wear what you want. No more school uniform that makes you hot in summer and cold in winter
  • You’re considered at treated as an adult
  • You won’t be in college 5 days a week - for an average full-time course, you can expect to be in college for 3 days a week
  • Not just traditional classrooms - if you enjoyed the art department and science labs at school because they didn’t look like a typical classroom, then you’ll love college
  • A less formal teaching style - all of our tutors are experienced in working with young adults and bring their own practical work experience into their classes
  • Getting you ready for work or uni - you will get more opportunities for work experience, mentors, guest speakers and tours/visits. This will give you a real taste of your chosen career on your next step to university.

If you are aged 16-18 then the majority of our courses are free for you to study. If you are aged 19+ then there may be fees associated with the course. You may be eligible to have some, or all of these fees waived by the College, depending on your individual circumstances. Visit our Financial Support pages for more information.

You do not have to let a lack of money stop you from coming to Hugh Baird College. We have bursaries and grants in place to help support those students that may find it more difficult to cover the costs of participating in further education, these include help with things such as tuition fees, childcare and travel. Visit our Financial Support pages for more information.

This depends on your course. On most of our full-time courses you can expect to be in College for 3 days per week.
