Apprenticeship Details

This course is for those aged 16 and above who are wishing to undertake a career in the Building Services Engineering Plumbing sector.

This qualification is predominantly for learners who want to be plumbers working in the BSE industry. The qualification may also be suitable for learners who are interested in plumbing and/or are considering a career change. The qualification has been specifically designed as a competence component in the Apprenticeship framework.

This qualification is a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ). It involves the skills and knowledge needed to do the job, ability to organize work and identify and prevent problems.

  • Understand and carry out safe working practices in building services engineering
  • Understand how to communicate with others within building services engineering
  • Understand how to apply environmental protection measures within BSE
  • Apply safe working practices in building services engineering working environment (NVQ)
  • Understand how to carry out site preparation and pipework fabrication techniques for domestic plumbing and heating systems
  • Understand and apply domestic cold water system installation and maintenance techniques
  • Understand and apply domestic hot water system installation and maintenance techniques
  • Understand and apply domestic central heating system installation and maintenance techniques
  • Understand how to apply scientific principles within MES
  • Understand and apply domestic rainwater system installation and maintenance techniques
  • Understand and apply domestic above ground drainage system installation and maintenance techniques
  • Install and maintain domestic plumbing and heating systems (NVQ)
  • Aged 16+
  • You must be employed within a relevant environment and demonstrate at least entry level skills in an initial Maths and English assessment.

You must have one of the following:

  • 4 GCSE's at grade 3 (old grading system D)
  • A relevant level 1 qualification
  • Evidence of the relevant knowledge, skills and behaviours required by the sector at Level 1

Most apprenticeships take between 12 - 18 months to complete.

Yes, you will be paid by your employer for the duration of your apprenticeship. You will be paid at least the government’s minimum wage rate for apprentices, £3.70. A lot of employers pay their apprentices a higher hourly wage than the minimum rate.

This is ultimately up to your employers, but more than 90% of apprentices stay in employment after their course ends.
