Course Details

This qualification for those aged 19 or over aims to develop learners’ understanding of autism and the principles of supporting autistic individuals - covering the person-centered approach and influence of positive communication methods, how to support positive behaviour, and how autistic individuals can be supported to live healthy and fulfilled lives.

To be awarded the Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Autism, learners are required to successfully complete 6 mandatory units:

  • Unit 01 Introduction to autism
  • Unit 02 Using a person-centered approach to support autistic individuals
  • Unit 03 Communication and social interaction in autistic individuals
  • Unit 04 Sensory processing, perception and cognition in autistic individuals
  • Unit 05 Supporting positive behaviour in autistic individuals
  • Unit 06 Supporting autistic individuals to live healthy and fulfilled lives
Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Autism
1pm - 5pm each Tuesday for 19 weeks.

Learners who successfully achieve this qualification** would be in a position to progress to a Foundation Entry Degree course in Health and Social Care or a Foundation Entry Degree course in Mental Health and Wellbeing at the Hugh Baird University Centre. 

They may also be in a position to study: 

  • L3 Access to Higher Education (Health and Social Care or Nursing and Midwifery) at the Hugh Baird University Centre***

The objective of this qualification is to help learners to progress within employment in a variety of sectors, and in a number of job roles where an understanding of autism and knowledge of how to support autistic individuals is required.

  • Care Work
  • Social Care Assistant
  • Mental Health support assistant
  • Further study potentially in Higher Education or Access to Higher Education

**  Functional Skills (English and / or Maths may be required and would be discussed at interview)

*** Functional Skills or GCSE (English and / or Maths will be required and would be discussed at interview)
