Highlights from the first half-term

It’s been an exciting first half-term across the College, filled with real-world learning, employer collaborations and standout achievements.

From national awards to hands-on enrichment, our students have embraced every opportunity. Here’s a look at what’s been happening.

eFIXX Electrical Roadshow

The College welcomed the eFIXX College Connections Roadshow, bringing an industry-standard electrical training environment directly onto campus. Students took part in interactive wiring challenges, live demonstrations and technical problem-solving sessions. The roadshow gave learners a unique opportunity to experience current trends in the electrical installation sector, test their practical skills against real-world standards, and gain insight into modern tools and technologies used by employers across the UK.

Mock Trial Experience with Local Magistrates

Students studying Criminology, Law and related subjects took part in a mock trial experience supported by local magistrates.

Learners stepped into a realistic courtroom environment, adopting roles such as clerk, advocate, witness and defendant. The simulation helped students understand judicial processes, develop critical thinking skills and explore pathways into legal, policing and criminal justice professions.

Recognition at the BRILLIANT Awards

The College won the Engineering Changemaker award at the 2025 BRILLIANT Festival Awards, recognising excellence in STEAM education, innovative practice and employer collaboration.

The award celebrates our employer-led Float Your Boat Challenge, in which students designed and built a model vessel focused on innovation, cost efficiency, and sustainability. The pioneering Ply-Jute Voyager not only completed the challenge but also secured the Sustainability Award, setting a new benchmark for low-carbon maritime design.

More than 85 students from T Level, Level 3 and Degree-level programmes worked together on this project, collaborating across disciplines such as mechanical engineering, design, materials science and project management. The challenge enabled learners to apply theory to real-world scenarios while strengthening their leadership, teamwork and problem-solving skills.

New Employer Stakeholder Pledge Partner

Alcedo Care Group has joined the College’s Employer Stakeholder Partnership Pledge, further strengthening our employer network and opening new opportunities for community impact. As part of this collaboration, Alcedo is supporting the development of a sensory garden within our Transitions Hub, helping create a calm, nurturing outdoor environment that will support learners with additional needs. This partnership reinforces the College’s commitment to working with organisations that share its values around care, wellbeing and inclusive support. Find out more.

Creative Arts Trip to Manchester

Students from the Creative Arts department travelled to Manchester for a cultural immersion day exploring galleries, creative spaces and the city’s vibrant design scene. From contemporary exhibitions to street-level visual culture, students were encouraged to analyse, sketch, photograph and reflect on the diversity of creative expression around them. The experience inspired new ideas for coursework and portfolio development while strengthening their understanding of creative career pathways.

Visits to Liverpool Museums

Creative Make-up, Fashion and Visual Merchandising students took part in enrichment visits to Liverpool Museums, where they explored costume design, theatrical make-up, curation, set dressing and the relationship between fashion, beauty and broader visual culture. These experiences supported their understanding of how creative industries operate behind the scenes and provided fresh inspiration for upcoming projects.

Professional Practice Session with Dionne from The Great British Sewing Bee

Visual Merchandising students had the opportunity to learn directly from Dionne, who appeared on The Great British Sewing Bee. She delivered a detailed professional practice session focused on industry expectations, creative process, technical skills and career opportunities. Students gained valuable insight into the realities of working in the creative industries and received personalised advice on developing their professional style.

Creative Make-up Masterclasses with Peaches and Cream and Givenchy

Creative Make-up students strengthened their technical and creative skills through professional masterclasses delivered by Peaches and Cream and Givenchy. These sessions introduced learners to high-end products, contemporary application techniques and the innovative demands of working in fashion, beauty and editorial environments. Students were able to watch demonstrations, ask questions and practice new techniques that will support their progression into specialist careers.

University Progression Engagement with Access Students

Representatives from Wrexham University, Liverpool John Moores University and the University of Liverpool have been on campus this term to deliver progression talks to Access to Higher Education students. Learners received guidance on degree options, application processes, student life and next steps beyond their Access programme. These sessions provide invaluable direction and help students make informed decisions about their progression into higher education.

LFC Foundation Activity with Sports Students

Sports students took part in an enrichment workshop delivered by the LFC Foundation, focusing on physical literacy, community health and coaching skills. Learners engaged in practical sessions exploring how sport can drive positive social change and support local communities. The experience helped students build coaching confidence, understand inclusive practice and explore future progression opportunities within sport, education and community outreach.

Partnership with the Home Builders Federation

The College has been selected as one of only ten further education colleges in England to join the new Partner a College programme, a national initiative developed by the Home Builders Federation and funded by CITB. The programme brings leading home builders directly into colleges to shape curriculum content, deliver specialist sessions, host site visits and provide work placements, ensuring students develop the practical, job-ready skills the construction sector needs.

As part of the pilot, the College will work alongside an extensive group of industry partners including Barratt, Redrow, Keepmoat, Anwyl Homes, The Hill Group, Untypical, Davidson Homes, The Tara Group, Taylor Wimpey and Ibstock Plc. Read more here.

Cataclean Employer-Led Project

Through an exciting partnership with Cataclean, students have been working on a technical, employer-designed project that mirrors real automotive engineering challenges. Learners are applying diagnostic skills, mechanical knowledge and problem-solving techniques to authentic scenarios drawn directly from industry practice. The project enhances both technical and professional readiness and gives learners meaningful exposure to employer standards.

Keepmoat Employer-Led Construction Project

Construction learners continue to benefit from a live project with Keepmoat Homes, one of the UK’s leading housing developers. Students are gaining valuable experience across build processes, health and safety expectations, construction sequencing and quality assurance. The project enhances practical awareness and strengthens relationships with employers, actively developing the region’s workforce.

Floral Design at Fleurex

Floristry students visited Fleurex, one of the industry’s respected creative hubs, where they explored advanced techniques, emerging trends and sustainable approaches to floral design. Learners took part in demonstrations, practised specialist techniques and gained valuable insight into commercial floral artistry. The experience supported the development of professional portfolios while connecting classroom learning to industry standards.

L20 Restaurant Collaboration with Voyagers
