At Hugh Baird University Centre, our PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education) programme gives you the skills, confidence, and classroom experience you need to launch a successful career in teaching and you could receive a generous bursary to help you along the way.
We know that making the leap into teaching can be a big step; especially if you’re changing careers or balancing other commitments. That’s why the Department for Education offers tax-free bursaries to eligible students training to teach in high-priority subject areas.
These bursaries can help to fund your studies or make your transition into teaching smoother and more manageable.
If you’re starting your PGCE course at Hugh Baird University Centre in September 2026, here’s what’s available:
Subject Bursary
- Science (including Biology, Chemistry, or Physics) - £31,000
- Mathematics - £31,000
- Engineering or Manufacturing -£31,000
- Computing - £31,000
- SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) - £15,000
- English - £10,000
Who’s Eligible?
To qualify for a bursary, you’ll need to meet certain criteria set by the Department for Education. You must:
- Be eligible for student support under student finance criteria.
- Hold GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade 4 (C) or above in English and Maths.
- Have at least a Level 3 qualification in the subject you plan to teach — or relevant professional experience.
- Be enrolled on a qualifying pre-service ITE (Initial Teacher Education) course in England.
- Not already hold a Level 5 or higher teaching qualification (such as a DET or equivalent).
- Not already have QTS, QTLS, EYTS, or ATS status.
- Not receive a salary or payment for teaching work linked to your training programme.
- Not be enrolled in another ITE or teacher training course at the same time.
