Understanding the Difference Between Application and Enrolment at Hugh Baird College
We know that the process of joining a new course can sometimes seem confusing, especially when it comes to the terms application and enrolment.

While application and enrolment they are both important steps towards starting your studies with us, they mean very different things. Here is a simple guide to help you understand the difference.
Application: Telling Us You Want a Place
Your application is the first step. It is how you let us know that you would like to study with us.
When you apply, you are expressing your interest in joining a particular course. Applications can be made online via our website, here.
After submitting your application, our Admissions Team will review it, and in most cases, you will be invited to an interview or discussion to ensure the course is the right fit for you. Once this is completed, you will typically receive a conditional or unconditional offer – which means we are offering you a place to study with us.
In short: Application = showing your interest and receiving an offer.
Enrolment: Officially Joining the College
Enrolment is the next step and happens after you have accepted your offer.
When you enrol, you officially confirm that you will be studying at Hugh Baird College. It is during enrolment that you will finalise your course choice, provide any required documents (such as your exam results), and complete all the necessary paperwork to become an official student.
Enrolment usually takes place closer to the start of the academic year, often during the summer once you have received your GCSE or other qualification results. It is also when you will receive your timetable, student ID, and important information about your first day.
In short: Enrolment = securing your place and officially becoming a student.
Why Both Are Important
Both steps are essential. Applying early gives you the best chance of securing your place on your chosen course, while enrolling ensures you are ready to start your studies without any delays.
If you apply but do not enrol, you will not be registered as a student and cannot start your course.
Key Dates to Remember
- Apply as soon as possible: Applications are open throughout the year but applying early gives you more options.
- Enrol during the summer: Applicants should keep an eye on their email and post for specific enrolment dates and instructions.
