Course Details
Carve your place in an industry that’s thriving with employment opportunities. A Level 2 qualification in Site Carpentry and Joinery equips students with the technical skills and knowledge needed to pursue a career they’re passionate about. Get ahead with real-world experience and invaluable connections with employers.
What will you learn?
Level 2 moves students up to joinery on a bigger scale — think floors, floor coverings, walls, stud work, hanging doors, door frames and linings, ironmongery, roof work and everything in between. You’ll delve into the structural stuff you’d be expected to do on a building site, for projects like new-build houses and loft conversions.
Build a portfolio with hands-on training
Level 2 Carpentry and Joinery (Site) is largely practical-based learning. You’ll split your time between the classroom, on-site workshops and carrying out labour for local businesses and councils. Your work throughout the year goes towards your portfolio, which makes up part of the assessment.
Get prepared for employment and self-employment
Site joinery is a staple skill in the trades industry, and students that apply themselves in their Level 2 course can usually head straight into a job on a housing site. Hugh Baird College has links with a number of local employers, who use us as their first port of call when they’re looking to fill apprenticeship spots.
Through our partnership with Howdens, industry experts regularly visit the College to give lectures, encourage students to take up an account with them, and offer discounts. This provides a solid jumping-off point for the self-employment route post-education.
Is this course right for you?
This course is open to students with a Level 1 Carpentry and Joinery qualification, or those with prior industry experience or relevant qualifications. We welcome men and women of all ages, as long as you have the drive to advance your trade skills.
How will you be assessed?
To achieve your Level 2 Site Carpentry and Joinery qualification, you’ll complete a mixture of assessments throughout the year. This includes three booklets covering key units: First fix, second fix and structural carpentry. You’ll also carry out a live assessment. This could involve the build of a model roof, model set of floors or panel work, but the concept changes from year to year.
The programme also includes studying towards Maths and English GCSE grade 9-4 if you don’t already have these.
