Course Details

The VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Women’s Hairdressing is a practical, career-focused qualification designed to give you the core skills and knowledge needed to work in a professional salon.

This course is for those aged 19+ and takes place over two evenings per week for one year.

You’ll learn how to cut, style, colour, and finish hair, while also gaining confidence in client consultation and understanding key salon practices. Theory work supports your practical learning, helping you develop a strong foundation in hairdressing techniques, hygiene, and industry standards.

Real-world experience in our commercial salons

Hugh Baird College is home to five training and commercial salons. You’ll have at least one practical session per week in these salons, providing cuts and colours to real clients that book appointments at the College.

Is this course right for you?

This qualification is open to anyone aged 19+ that wants to pursue a career in employed or self-employed hairdressing.

As long as you have a real interest in hairdressing, no prior experience is needed.

How will you be assessed?

To successfully complete the course, you will be required to undertake a series of assignments, multiple-choice examinations, and practical assessments.

This course is designed to build your practical expertise in essential salon services, including cutting, styling, colouring, and client consultation. You’ll gain the skills to create on-trend hair designs, deliver professional shampooing and conditioning treatments, and apply colouring and lightening techniques with confidence.

Alongside hands-on experience, you'll deepen your knowledge through theory work covering professional standards, health and safety, and the structure of the hairdressing industry. To support your individual interests and career ambitions, you’ll also have the chance to explore a variety of optional units, enabling you to personalise your learning journey.
